Ajifa the Orange Seller ( Episode 1 )
My name is Ajifa. I am an Igala girl from Idah, Kogi state.
We are a family of nine, seven children and an aged father and mother. Growing up in a very poor family where ths only thing we had to boast of, was a giant and old but very fruitful orange tree, if you called us the poorest family in Idah, I wouldn't argue with you
.
As the last of 7 children, i was left with the duty of caring for my aged parents, after my 6 siblings left home, sake of marriage, ambition, etc. And it always broke my heart, seeing my family lack, even basic amenities of life..
My dream was always to break the poverty jinx in my family but how to achieve this, was the question.
I started hawking our only asset at 7years old, round our Idah neighborhood and closeby markets and being a village where many of such trees, exist, i didn't make much money, selling oranges.
After my secondary school education, which i only managed through contributions and donations from various good willing individuals, I set out for Lagos. Orile was my first start!
I squatted and did all manner of menial jobs to get even a room of my own, around same location.
" Ajifa, what's the next step? You got no business capital and are getting sick from sweeping gutters and cleaning toilets, with no substantial money to treat yourself "
And boooom " my sweet oranges " an idea dropped.....
